About City
About City:
Singapore, city, capital of the Republic of Singapore. It occupies the southern part of the island of Singapore. The city, once a separate entity, came to dictate the island as the Republic of Singapore essentially became a city-state. Its strategic position on the strait amongst the Indian Ocean and the South China Sea, complemented by its deep-water port, has made it the largest port in Southeast Asia and one of the largest shopping centers in the world.
Singapore known as "Lion City" or "Garden City", the latter for its numerous parks and tree-lined streets has also been called "Instant Asia" because it offers the tourist a quick glimpse of the cultures that are brought in by immigrants from all parts of Asia. The traditional city proper stretches north and east of the port area and is characterized by low (140–150-foot [40–50-metre]) hills. Within the city run the Singapore and Rochor rivers, which are inlets cluttered with indigenous crafts. The novel settlement north of the Singapore River remains the heart of the city; it is the site of major commercial, government and public buildings and of St. Andrew's Anglican Cathedral (1862).
Singapore's port area, one of the largest in the world, covers 93 km2. The Singapore Port Authority operates six gateways: Jurong Port, Container Terminal, Keppel, Telok Ayer, Sembawang and Pasir Panjang Docks which provide facilities for vessels ranging from ocean-going liners to lighters. Keppel Docks, which are secure between Brani and Sentosa Islands, are deep water and contain important docks and warehouses. Keppel is Southeast Asia's chief transshipment point for exports of oil, rubber, plywood, lumber and spices.
